CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The receptionist led us down the hallway and to a room on the left. There was a room on the right, too, but that door was closed. As we waited for the doctor to join us, I looked around the examining room.

It’s weird to have a doctor’s visit in what once was someone’s bedroom. It wasn’t unprofessional in the least, but there was just this strange disconnect in not having the sterility I was used to in a standard doctor’s visit. I think it was the colors. They were warm instead of cool because she’d left in the brown wood paneling on the walls. I’m used to white walls, you know. Bright, glaring, white walls. Clean walls.

(Not that these were dirty, but they could’ve been and I’d never have known it. I like that in my own home, hides the dust, but not in the doctor’s office.)

At least the floor wasn’t carpet. That would’ve been a step too far for my secretly germophobic soul. I may not like to clean, but I very much do not like smells and I can imagine in a doctor’s office things would accumulate in carpet. (And now that we’ve had that unpleasant thought together…)

There was a light knock at the door and a woman with dark hair streaked the slightest bit gray stepped into the room, smiling. “Hi. I’m Dr. Dillon. You must be Maggie.” She held a hand out to me and I took it. She had a firm grip, but soft hands. “Jamie’s told me a bit about you.”

“Why, because she’s known I was pregnant this whole time even though I didn’t?”

She laughed as she washed her hands in the sink. Her laugh was warm like the room. “No. I was curious about the barkery and café and the plans for the pet resort. I love to cook, but the thought of turning that love into a business is a daunting one. Not that I would, mind you. I didn’t attend all those years of medical school to become a baker. Although, there are days when that seems very appealing.”

“Oh, that makes sense.”

She smiled at Jamie. “But she did make me promise to fit you in as soon as possible if you ever asked.”

I rubbed at the back of my neck. “I didn’t realize I was pregnant, you know. I just figured I was stress-eating.”

“It happens.”

“I haven’t been taking folic acid. And I drink Coke. A lot.”

She squeezed my shoulder. “There’s actually not as much caffeine in a Coke as there is in a cup of coffee. Which means you’re probably better off than a coffee-drinker who doesn’t know they’re pregnant.” She smiled at me. “Let’s make a deal. We won’t worry about the baby’s health until there’s something to worry about. Your body and mind are going to have enough to deal with in the next little bit without adding in additional concerns.”

Clearly this woman did not know me well, but I just nodded.

“Now. First things first, let’s get you
